Summer in Calgary means sunshine, patios, cold treats, and icy drinks. But for many people, it also means one not-so-fun thing: tooth sensitivity. If you’ve ever taken a sip of a cold beverage or bitten into an ice cream and felt a sudden zinging pain in your teeth, you’re not alone. As a family dentist in NE Calgary, I see a noticeable increase in patients complaining of sensitive teeth during summer months.
In this blog, I’ll break down:
- Why your teeth become sensitive in summer
- What might be causing it
- What you can do to prevent or treat it
- And when it’s time to visit your dentist
Why Are Teeth More Sensitive in the Summer?
There are a few seasonal factors that may contribute to heightened tooth sensitivity:
- Cold Treats & Drinks Summer = more cold items. Icy water, popsicles, slushies, and ice cream can trigger sensitivity in teeth with exposed dentin.
- Increased Acidic or Sugary Food Intake Lemonade, citrus fruits, soda, and summer BBQ sauces may wear down your enamel faster due to acid and sugar content.
- Dehydration & Mouth Dryness Hot weather leads to dehydration, which reduces saliva. Less saliva = more bacteria = higher risk of gum issues and erosion.
- Aggressive Brushing During Outdoor Activity When we brush too hard after consuming sweet or sticky summer snacks (or after camping trips), we may wear enamel down unknowingly.
Common Causes of Sensitive Teeth
Let’s look at the main culprits, regardless of the season:
Cause | How It Affects Sensitivity |
Worn enamel | Exposes dentin, making teeth reactive to temperature |
Gum recession | Exposes root surfaces, which are not protected by enamel |
Tooth grinding (bruxism) | Wears down protective surfaces and may crack enamel |
Cavities or fractures | Allow stimuli to reach the nerves of the tooth |
Acidic diet | Erodes enamel over time, especially with frequent citrus/sugary intake |
Post-whitening treatment sensitivity | Temporary sensitivity after bleaching agents interact with dentin |
Prevention Tips from Dr. Richa Bhatnagar
Here’s how you can protect your teeth this summer:
1. Use a Soft-Bristled Toothbrush Avoid scrubbing too hard. Use gentle, circular motions with a soft-bristle brush. It’s easier on enamel and gums.
2. Switch to a Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth Brands like Sensodyne, Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief, or Crest Gum & Sensitivity are designed to block the pain signals going to the nerves.
Tip: Look for potassium nitrate or stannous fluoride in the ingredients list.
3. Cut Back on Acids and Sugars Drink acidic drinks through a straw and avoid sipping slowly over long periods. Rinse with water after acidic meals.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water to keep saliva levels up and protect your mouth’s natural defenses.
5. Use a Mouthguard If You Grind Your Teeth If you notice sore jaws in the morning or chipped teeth, talk to us about a custom bite guard.
6. Book a Summer Dental Checkup Catching issues early—like enamel wear, gum recession, or microcracks—can save you from worsening sensitivity.
When to See a Dentist
You should visit Jacksonport Dental Clinic if:
- Your sensitivity is worsening or persistent
- You’re avoiding cold food or drinks entirely
- Brushing or flossing causes pain
- You suspect a cracked tooth or cavity
Sometimes, sensitivity is a symptom of something more serious—like a cavity or infection. A quick visit can give you peace of mind and relief.
